Our recent work

We work to embed the Personal Capabilities into many programmes and initiatives at the Centre for Science Education and with our project partners. Some recent projects have been:

Stockport Local Authority (ongoing) - Primary Consultancy to embed Personal Capabilities into curriculum provision in Stockport schools.

Smarter Schools (2008-9) Smart Kids (2009-10) AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust Funded Innovative Curriculum Development Projects.

Lithuanian National Curriculum Review (Sept 09-Feb 10) - consultancy with regard to developing a personal skills framework for Lithuania and related professional teacher training.

Northern Ireland Council Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA)
Consultancy advice and development has been underway with the Northern Ireland's Council for Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA) since 2000, where we have shared and furthered our learning in the development and delivery of part of the Revised Curriculum Strategy on Thinking Skills & Personal Capabilities. Further work continues with the development of classroom resources for Key Stage 1 and 2.

Manchester's Behaviour for Learning Strategy (Manchester Education Partnership)
Development and embedding of the Manchester Behaviour for Learning Framework draws on our experience into Personal Capability development. Working in partnership with Manchester Local Authority on this strategy has led to exploring the implications of a skills and competence based approach to curriculum development with primary and secondary schools. This work has influenced the DFES Social Emotional Aspects of Learning Initiatives.

Consultative work - Personal Learning & Thinking Skills; QCA - Futurelab Working Party.
We have provided advice to QCA regarding the Personal, Learning & Thinking Skills Framework (December 2005) and through the QCA-Futurelab short review (March 2007).

Level 6 Science Extension Tasks
We adopted a skills based ethos when designing and writing the Level 6 Extension tasks for the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (link to site) where we encouraged children with above average ability in Science to think about and apply their Science learning to unusual contexts such as 'The Death of Amenhotep', an Egyptian Pharoh, the Olympics, and to the 'Plight of the Turtles' in the Galapogos Islands.

Primary Upd8
We've worked on developing bespoke Primary Upd8 tasks for CCEA (Northern Ireland) which use Science in the news to engage children in applying their knowledge and understanding. These tasks have been infused with the Personal Capabilities of teamwork, problem solving, creativity and self management.

Enterprise Education
Enterprise Education Pathfinder Programmes at Key Stage 4 also incorporate the Personal Capabilities in LEA development projects.

Our research and curriculum development with primary and secondary schools continues to further understanding into Personal Capabilities, with the support of The Comino Foundation - a valued partner of the Centre for Science Education. The Sheffield Comino Centre resides in the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University and aims to:

  • enable people to understand the process of achieving, within a framework of their personal and social responsibility
  • support the development of people's potential to work for the benefit of themselves and others
  • encourage groups and individuals to work at building a prosperous and responsible society.
